Key 2: Sadness

page 41 in the Starting Over Guide

Sadness is not a setback. It’s a sign you’re starting to feel again. In the Starting Over journey, Key 2 invites you to stop numbing and start grieving. Not just the big losses, but the quiet ones: time lost, trust broken, parts of yourself you had to hide to survive. This sadness isn’t weakness. It’s a turning point.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
— Matthew 5:4

Reflection Prompts

Take time to write, reflect, or sit with these questions. You can answer privately or share in the comments below.

  • What have I lost that I never gave myself permission to grieve?
  • How have I avoided sadness in the past? What has it cost me?
  • What would it mean to allow myself to feel sadness without shame?
  • What parts of myself or my story still need a goodbye?

Closing Notes

Letting yourself feel sadness is a form of healing. Grief clears space for what comes next. You don’t have to stay in it forever—but you do have to pass through.
