Key 7: Goodwill

page 121 in the Starting Over Guide

Goodwill is the practice of seeing others as human even when it’s hard. In Starting Over, Goodwill means resisting the urge to isolate, lash out, or retreat behind walls. It’s about showing up with openness, especially when your instinct is to protect or distance yourself. Goodwill doesn’t mean letting people walk all over you; it means moving through the world with a posture of care instead of defense.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.”
— Matthew 5:9

Reflection Prompts

Take time to write, reflect, or sit with these questions. You can answer privately or share in the comments below.

  • Where in my life have I chosen protection over connection?
  • What does it feel like to approach others with openness instead of suspicion?
  • Have I been withholding goodwill from myself or from people who may not have earned it?
  • What would it look like to be generous—not just with things, but with grace?

Closing Notes

Goodwill is one of the clearest signs of growth. It says, “I’ve been hurt, but I’m choosing not to carry that hurt forward.” In recovery, this becomes a superpower. Not because you’re perfect, but because you’re intentional.
