Key 8: Disconnect

page 141 in the Starting Over Guide

Sometimes the most powerful act of healing is walking away. Disconnect is about cutting ties with the people, places, habits, and thought patterns that feed your addiction or keep you circling the same pain. It’s not about rejection or bitterness. It’s about protection. When you disconnect from what harms you, you start making space for what can restore you.

“If you want to fly, you have to give up the things that weigh you down.”
— Toni Morrison

Reflection Prompts

Take time to write, reflect, or sit with these questions. You can answer privately or share in the comments below.

  • What people, habits, or environments keep pulling me back into the same struggles?
  • Where have I tried to change without changing what surrounds me?
  • What does it feel like to imagine stepping away, even if it’s scary or lonely?
  • What new people, places, or routines could help support the person I want to become?

Closing Notes

Letting go doesn’t mean giving up; it means choosing freedom. Disconnecting from what’s harmful is an act of love for your future, for your healing, and for who you’re becoming.
